Shows clips from the kick off and also NTID/RIT students responding to the question "what is audism?"

On December 18th, 2007 at NTID/RIT Orange & Brown Coalition hosted a kick off and celebration of Laurent Clerc's birthday. O & B's mission was reviewed and the film "AUDISM UNVEILED" was shown and discussed. It was an inspiring night. It is worthwhile for faculty, staff, student and alumni to be part of the Orange & Brown Coalition.

Congrats on the new Coalition! May it go far in its works!
Most heartbreaking part for me was the many "I dunno" responses to "What is audism?"...
Shows that there's much more work that needs to be done at RIT, at other colleges with Deaf students, and in our Deaf children's education as well as continuing our current work in ASL and Deaf Studies classes.
Thank you for taking this proactive step and sharing it with us via vlogs.

stay tune for part II

whereas part I is a bit dismaying to see how many folks said they didn't know the term audism - the post film discussions shown in part II illustrate that all of the attendees KNEW what audism was intimately = they just had never seen the term before or had logged it into their glossary

there is definitely power with NAMING a thing. this is true for racism, sexism, homophobia, etc

its also important for us to not abuse this new term - not to weild it AT people. while a collective consciousness is raising it is important for us to know that systematic audism exists and has a name and we have an important role in combating it peacefully and positively. i was glad in the post-film discussion to see that no one called anyone an audist - but instead talked broadly of audism or audist behavior

very grateful that Gallaudet U. produced the film AUDISM UNVEILED - for me it truly illustrates the power of the medium of film. prior to this documentary hardly any lay people were using the term Audism (see Humphries and Lane)

The film has really fostered an indepth understanding and examination of this term and phenomenon in ASL and in a very visual form - Veditz would be proud

someone asked for clips of the film to be in the vlog - sorry folks we dont have permission to use any excerpts of the film. Hopefully DSP will release the film really soon - many many many folks really want their own copy

i know i do

big thanks to orange and brown for showing the film at ntid/rit

also big thanks to noella and ruthie for editing part I and II of the kick off

folks often down realize editing down video of many different signers for a few short minutes requires hours and hours

im sure ruthie's back is sore

happy birthday O & B Coalition

peace

The term being discussed here is AUDISM (not auTism)
